What Are KS2 SATs?

KS2 SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) are national assessments taken by Year 6 students in England, typically in May of Year 6. They assess attainment in English and Mathematics against the Key Stage 2 curriculum and are used by secondary schools as part of their admissions information and by primary schools to measure pupil progress.

  • English Reading — a reading booklet and answer booklet assessing comprehension, inference and language understanding across fiction and non-fiction texts.
  • Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling (GPS) — grammar and punctuation questions plus a separate spelling test.
  • Mathematics — two papers: an arithmetic paper (mental and written calculation) and a mathematical reasoning paper (applied problem-solving).

What OwlPath SATs Tutoring Covers

Reading & Comprehension

Developing the ability to read carefully, identify key information, make inferences, and explain understanding in writing. SATs reading papers require children to engage with unfamiliar texts under timed conditions — a skill built through structured practice and vocabulary development.

Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

Identifying and applying grammatical structures, punctuation rules and spelling patterns as tested in the GPS paper. Many children lose marks in this paper not through lack of ability but through unfamiliarity with the specific question formats.

Arithmetic

Fast, accurate mental and written calculation across all four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages and order of operations. Speed matters here — the arithmetic paper is time-pressured and rewards confident, efficient calculation.

Mathematical Reasoning

Multi-step problem solving, data interpretation, geometry and algebra applied in context. Children need to read carefully, identify what is being asked, and select the right method — as well as calculate accurately.

Exam Technique

Pacing, checking work, and understanding how marks are allocated. Developed through timed practice using past SATs papers throughout the programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do Year 6 SATs take place?+

KS2 SATs are taken in May of Year 6 — for the 2026 sitting, SATs week runs Monday 11 to Thursday 14 May 2026. Results are shared with schools in July.

Should my child start SATs preparation in Year 5 or Year 6?+

Starting in Year 5 gives children more time to build confidence and address weaker areas before the pressure of Year 6 builds. Year 6 preparation is still very effective, particularly in the second half of the autumn term and spring term leading up to SATs week in May.

What subjects do SATs cover?+

KS2 SATs cover English (Reading and Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling) and Mathematics (Arithmetic and Mathematical Reasoning). Writing is teacher-assessed rather than tested by exam.

Are group or one-to-one sessions better for SATs?+

It depends on the child. Group sessions (maximum four students) work well for children who are broadly on track but need structured practice and exam technique. One-to-one sessions are better for children with specific subject gaps that need targeted attention. The right format is confirmed during the free consultation.

Is in-person SATs tutoring available in Wirral?+

Yes — face-to-face sessions are available across the Wirral alongside online sessions. The format is confirmed during your free consultation.

What does the free assessment cover?+

The free 30-minute diagnostic assessment covers English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, giving a clear picture of your child's current level and the areas that most need attention before SATs.

Do you use past SATs papers in sessions?+

Yes — past papers and SATs-style practice are built into the programme to develop exam familiarity, timing and technique alongside subject knowledge.
